Pictures of Labyrinth the Movie Socks

We're all here for Labyrinth facts, so let's get the one that's on all of our minds out of the way…

1. Jareth's bulge was not an accidental costume blunder, but a conscious decision

Conceptual designer, Brian Froud, made the decision about Bowie's crotch: "We got in a lot of trouble about – maybe how tight his pants were, but it was deliberate." Other parts of his Jareth's appearance were also chosen to hint towards him being a rock star – for example, his "swagger stick", which was made to look like a microphone.

2. Michael Jackson could have played Jareth instead

The character of The Goblin King was originally going to feature less in the movie in some of the early drafts. In one script, Terry Jones made it so that Jareth didn't appear in the film until the halfway mark. Later, he was told by director Jim Henson that either David Bowie or Michael Jackson was going to play Jareth, so the character had to play a more significant singing role. Bowie agreed to the role after two years of meeting up with Henson to receive updates on the movie.

3. The ball juggling stunts were not done by Bowie

These stunts were performed by Michael Moschen, a choreographer. The crystal balls were juggled by Moschen, who was positioned behind Bowie with his arm sticking out from under Bowie's armpit.

4. Many familiar actresses were auditioning for the part of Sarah

These included Ally Sheedy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mary Stuart Masterson, Yasmine Bleeth, Laura Dern, Jane Krakowski, Mia Sara and Laura San Giacomo. The top three before Jennifer Connelly was finally picked out were Maddie Corman, Sheedy, and Krakowski.

5. The goblins never actually spoke from their mouths

Bowie kept getting in a bit of a muddle on set, as the goblin's voices would always come from the side of or behind the set. The direction of their voices kept throwing him off – tricky, but he managed it!

6. The baby didn't have a great first encounter with Jareth

Brian Froud's son, Toby, admits that he recalls very little from his experience on the set of Labyrinth – what with being a baby and all. But in an interview with Portland Monthly, he does say that upon meeting Bowie he might have peed on him.

7. Toby is all grown up, and here's what he looks like now:

About 30 years later, the babe with the power is now a puppeteer living in Portland, USA. He's worked on films such as Paranorman, Boxtrolls, and the Chronicles of Narnia.

8. The character Hoggle was controlled by five people

There were 18 motors in Hoggle's face, which were controlled by four people. Meanwhile, an actress inside the Hoggle puppet was providing all of the body movements.

9. Hoggle is now in Alabama

A worker unpacking at the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama, was given the fright of his life when he was surprised with the life sized Hoggle. Hoggle has stayed in the unclaimed baggage museum since the incident.

10. The film failed at the box office, and Henson was "devastated" about it

Jane Henson admitted that her husband took the film's flop personally, and said that he felt like he was being rejected by his audience. Luckily, he was told about the movie's growing cult before he passed away in 1990.
